White Bear - The March of the Great White Bear (2017)
“What is this polar bear doing?” The video depicts captive polar bears, their behaviours and their artificial habitats. The work is not about polar bears but, by focusing on a single species, aims to explore the roles and dilemmas of animal captivity programs. The robotic movements are based on the "stereotypic behaviours (endless repetition of a fixed sequence of movements)" of polar bears in captivity, recorded in 17 enclosures in Europe and China. In ethological studies, these behaviors are often linked to limited environmental conditions and psychological stress, serving as a warning sign of maladaptation. However, it is important to note that the presence of stereotypic behaviors does not necessarily indicate poor current living conditions; rather, they may result from past environments the animals have previously inhabited. The polar bear exhibit Artica at Blijdorp Zoo was constructed in 2008 and renovated in 2011. During feeding sessions, visitors gather in a theater-like viewing area to watch the bears. In the picture, Todz and Sizzel are siblings born in 2014 and lived with their mother Olinka (1992-2021) in Rotterdam at the time of the photo. Todz and Sizzel currently reside in France and Germany, respectively. In 2021, their elder brother, Vicks (2010-), casted a rock underwater and cracked the glass window on the left side of the enclosure. When this picture was taken, Hagenbeck zoo hoped polar bears Victoria and Blizzard will breed successfully. However, in 2018, ultrasound examinations revealed Blizzard's infertility. As a result, the zoo performed artificial insemination on Victoria, leading to the birth of Anouk in December 2022. Hagenbeck Zoo, Hamburg was opened in 1907. The new 8,000 square metres Arctic Ocean exhibit was opened in 2012, which accommodates seals, walruses, and polar bears. Since 2009, the Highland Wildlife Park has housed polar bears in this modern, thoughtfully designed exhibit. The main enclosures, two in total, offer relatively large space, each featuring a pond, soft substrates, lush vegetation, and extensive exploration areas. The total area exceeds the Manitoba Standard. The provision of two enclosures allows the facility to mimic the solitary lifestyle of wild polar bears. The enclosure featured painted icebergs on its walls, although most polar bears kept in captivity worldwide are born in zoos and may not have any knowledge of real icebergs. These bears would occasionally use the rough walls to scratch themselves, which resulted in the bears' buttocks turning blue due to continuous rubbing against the wall, wearing off the blue paint. Currently, the zoo has expanded the area next to the enclosure with a forest for the polar bears, and the original enclosure walls have been repainted, erasing the painted icebergs. Berlin Zoo has a long history with housing polar bears since 1845. The pictured bears, Tosca, Nancy, and Katjuscha, were long-term residents but passed away between 2014 and 2021. Polar bears in captivity can live for up to 30 years, thanks to veterinary care, exceeding their wild counterparts' lifespans. Presently, in 2023, Berlin Zoo no longer hosts polar bears. Notably, Tosca gave birth to and abandoned Knut (2006-2011) in 2006. Knut, a bear hand-reared by humans, skyrocketed in popularity, boosting the zoo's revenue by 30% in 2007. Prague Zoo’s polar bear exhibit consists two linked enclosures, replete with a swimming pool, artificial rapids and an ice maker (added in 2015). The bears seems well cared for; they are fed once a day and their diet includes mackerels, herrings, salmon, beef and fish oil. During hot weather they will be fed ice cubes containing frozen fish, carrots and apples. But the enclosure, built in 1933, falls far below modern standards. The zoo's 2022 announcement to construct a CZK 800 million Arctic pavilion “Artikada” awaits municipal council approval in September 2023. The seal-shaped float in the picture is a toy for polar bears. Seals are essential prey for wild polar bears, but those born in captivity likely have never encountered real seals. This outdated enclosure was built over 100 years ago, and the zoo had not been able to finance a renovation or new building. In 2019, Wuppertal Zoo announced its intent to cease housing polar bears. This became a reality when the last bear, Anori, was relocated to Mulhouse Zoo, France in 2021. Polar bears Imaq and Inuk are the twin cubs of Malik. The polar bear exhibit replaced a traditional concrete bear grotto in 1999, offering improved bear management and viewing opportunities. Originally designed for up to three bears, it's now set for expansion. The exhibit mimics the natural landscapes of Greenland's fjords and coastlines with tundra and taiga vegetation. Keepers regularly hide meat for enrichment, and saltwater in the pools maintains bear health and fur whiteness. Ranua Zoo is the northernmost zoo in the world with polar bears. This exhibit includes two adjacent outdoor enclosures (2,300 and 1,800 m2) with indoor access. The bear's diet features raw meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, honey, and Mazuri® polar bear supplement with additional fish liver oil and vitamin B. Situated near the Arctic Circle, the zoo shares a climate with wild polar bears; in July, temperatures average 14°C. Bears have outdoor access at night, nesting materials, and monitored pool water. Three weeks after this photo was taken (March 4, 2023), four-year-old polar bear Imaq was fatally electrocuted after accessing an electricity supply cabinet and biting through a cable, raising concerns about the exhibit's safety and Copenhagen Zoo's ability to care for captive polar bears. Opened in 2013, the 1,050m2 Arctic Ring cost €20 million. Designed to resemble the Greenland coastline in summer, it features rocks, pebbles, and Arctic flora, with a dry moat separating the bears from visitors. Daily food enrichment items, including cow and horse heads, are provided. The little bear, Lale, was born in December, 2013 and was under a year old when the picture was taken. He lived with his mother, Valeska, at the Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven. In 2015, Lale was relocated to the Emmen, the Netherlands (as shown in another photo in this exhibit). In late 2013, during the New Year's celebration, the city government prohibited fireworks and firecrackers near the pier where young Lale lived. The zoo, established in 1928, is one of Europe's smallest scientifically run zoos, covering just 1.2 hectares. The zoo houses around 280 animals from 47 species, including Humboldt penguins and pumas. Currently, around 300 polar bears reside in captivity across over 150 facilities, encompassing zoos, aquariums, and parks (including one circus). It is not entirely clear what they are; it is possible that they are a cross-breed of brown and white bears, or a subspecies of black bear called "spirit bear" The park labeled and marketed them as polar bears.

The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), previously the Nevada Test Site (NTS), is home to 928 American nuclear tests. Formerly known as the Nevada Proving Grounds, the site was established on 11 January 1951 for the testing of nuclear devices, covering approximately 1,360 square miles (3,500 km2) of desert and mountainous terrain. MELK (2016-) Mobile photo app, footballs, photographs, TV program (medium depends on project progression) 'MELK' attempts to engage the intensive dairy industry as a consumer, staring with the Netherlands. The project begins by focusing on a (Campina) milk carton, which is oftentimes the only surface between the consumer and actual liquid milk. This layer of graphical information provides a crucial portal: with their intended appearances, milk cartons seem to be the 'selfies' of the industry. -- This picture: "Open day of 'Dairy Campus, 2016" 關於荷蘭酪農業與消費者盲從。我發現許多消費者完全（也許過度）信賴動物產品包裝上的元素，因而將自己化為一位好奇的消費者，對牛奶瓶上的「放牧牛」標章認證機構提問，並以創作回應其回應。隨後利用統計分析，我找出了該標章驗證流程上的盲點，並設計了一款照相手機程式，讓消費者有機會使用攝影工具參與「放牧牛」標章驗證過程。呈現上，我將介入的歷程化為電玩，讓觀眾能以互動的方式閱讀作品。期間我也鼓勵當地調查媒體KVW為「放牧牛」製作專題，亦為試驗媒體與個人介入產業之差異。節目於2017年3月播出。

This selection of images highlights my engagements with its Weidemelk certificate, specifically whether there are scientific verifications for its very precise claim of “cows graze in the Dutch pasture at least 120 days per year, 6 hours per day.” The process resulted in several usership-based items, for example: footballs (kickable publication) was made after the two parties responsible for Weidemelk kicked my questions back and forth to each other; an app was proposed to empower the consumer to help verify the claim using mobile photography, after a mathematical evidence questioning the validity of Weidemelk’s original audition process.

The verification of Weidemelk's claim is a random sampling question. From MIL-STD-105 form, one can deduct that it takes at least 8-20 inspections yearly per farm to be statistically reasonable for the claim, where Campina has more than 10,000 farms. Though farmers may claim that it is easy for them to meet Weidemelk's requirements, grazing activity is declining in the Netherlands as the industry expands. Scientifically-sound validation of such claim will one day be required.

MELK (2016-) (Ongoing) 'MELK' is an ongoing project that engages the intensive dairy industry from the consumer's viewpoint. The milk carton is the only surface between the consumer and liquid milk. With their intended appearances, milk cartons are the 'selfies' of the industry. Starting with Netherlands, the project focus on a Campina 'Weidemelk' carton by examining and engaging its surfaces. The medium is decided base on development. --------- About 'Weidevoetbal' --------- 'Weidemelk' certification claims that dairy cows graze in the meadow for at least 120 days per year and 6 hours a day. But how to verify this claim scientifically? Since Stichting Weidegang (certification body) & Qlip (audit company) are kicking my questions, I made a ’weidevoetbal’, inviting people to kick it around.

The player can easily experience the consequences of overfishing, and have to figure out how to fish sustainably. This is the result of my artist in residence period (May-July.2017) on Atlas Initiatief, a former fishing vessel. Great thanks to Laura Schippers and Stijn de Geus for the opportunity and kind help. In F/EEL, most of the sections are completely dark as eels does not have good eye sights (we turned on the lights just for photography documentations). Participants are alone in the escape room - one person enters at a time. They received minor instructions: ‘… your goal is to find the exit of this space; from this point on we cannot advise you anymore.‘

Hydraulic barrier section - dam and human ladders Eel ladders are engineered structures designed to help juvenile European eels bypass barriers like dams, but their effectiveness is limited. Many eels fail to find or use them, especially if flow conditions are poor or the ladders are poorly maintained. They mostly assist small elvers, while larger eels migrating downstream face turbine injuries. Even when used, ladders can delay migration and impact survival. Studies show ladders alone aren’t enough and should be part of broader strategies, including fish-friendly turbines, timed shutdowns, and habitat restoration. In F/EEL, we designed human ladders from an alien's perspective. The participants can ascend the ladder by 'walking' while their feet are in the metal pedals. But not every human understood how to use them.

Security cam stills -Poaching section - nets Poaching poses a major threat to the migration and survival of European eels (Anguilla anguilla), especially during their vulnerable life stages. The illegal capture of juvenile eels (elvers) for the lucrative black market—mainly for consumption and aquaculture in Asia—disrupts their upstream migration, depleting wild populations before they can mature. Smuggling networks operate across Europe, with seizures totaling millions of elvers annually. Adult eels migrating downstream to spawn are also targeted, further reducing reproductive success. Despite strict EU regulations and trade bans, enforcement remains inconsistent. Poaching, combined with habitat loss and pollution, continues to undermine the recovery of this critically endangered species.

名古屋東山動植物園 The bear in this photo is Sasquatch, probably born in the wild in 1990 and brought to Nagoya as a cub. He was Japan’s oldest male polar bear. During humid summers, his fur often turned green due to algae in the water. His outdated enclosure, painted white to mimic the Arctic, lacked soft substrate, and the concrete flooring was unsuitable for his needs. Additionally, noise levels from visitors are also disturbingly high. Sasquatch passed away in May 2020 due to liver failure. 札幌市円山動物園 In 2018, new polar bear enclosure opens at Sapporo Maruyama Zoo, called the "Polar Bear Museum," cost €17 million (2.3 billion yen). The exhibit includes a main enclosure of 1,400 m² with a 150 m² pool. The exhibit is an improvement over the previous design, but remains relatively small in modern standard. Located in Hokkaido, the zoo benefits from a colder climate, more suited to polar bears. Maruyama Zoo actively participates in breeding programs and research, but concerns about enclosure size persist. In this setup, the fishing nets emulate the appearance of seaweeds growing downwards, while the projectors mimic the glow of sunlight from above. Throughout the exhibition period, the hanging fishing nets progressively increase in density and length. As the show reaches its final days, the nets devour the space, entangling the audience and obstructing video projections. This resonates with the fact that the museum's space, much like the ocean, is finite. Overlooking this fact may result in the overwhelming expansion of green or sustainable initiatives.

One of the main roadways through the Camargue, with a lot of very fast drivers. Many times —when I turned back too late and had to return to Arles after dark— I had to cycle on this roadway for about 10 km. It was quite scary, even with my reflective vest and lots of bicycle lights. Near 3-1, some horses passed through the muddy terrain. From time to time, I saw squashed caterpillars (pine processionary moths, considered pests by humans) in this location, as well as several others in the wetland. I often noticed the caterpillars whilst I was filming something else, only for a car to run them over a moment later. One Saturday, I decided to take a walk through a less explored section of the map. I took a bus along the Rhône, and tried to walk the return leg slowly for 25 km. It was a quiet part of the wetland; the vegetation and wildlife were abundant. Near this part of the national park I found a badger and a cat. The lake view of 8-1. This morning was a bit chilly, but the lake was smooth and tranquil with swans floating across its surface. The scene was elegant, almost theatrical. At the same time, you could hear the piercing sound of speeding vehicles cutting through the atmosphere. 20220325–03

Vegetation near 8-1. I stayed near this location for a week, so that I could visit the road both at night and at sunrise. Indeed, there’s far more roadkill visible in the early morning — I found several killed nutria at the start of each day. During an excursion at night, I also realized that many animals seem to react more slowly in darkness. Lots of them are nocturnal. At times, the nutria ran alongside me after dark! During the day, they would be sure to hide from humans. It’s pitch black at night, meaning drivers can struggle to react when they see animals on the road. Having no light pollution, though, is a good thing for wildlife, so it is a difficult problem to solve; there must be a smart way to make both ends meet. 20220325-3

A morning view. I made several 60–70 km bike rides during my stay in the village of Gallician, reaching the Plage de l’Espiguette (a large beach), the medieval walls of Aigues-Mortes, and the Carbonniere Tower. For me, these long trips were beautiful, even if I sometimes had to walk through puddles and mud. There is little connection between the river and the local residents. “With the development of the industrial colonies, one after another, the Llobregat River became to be called the “most exploited river in the world”. Only in retrospect is it easier to appreciate this navel glaring. But the reputation of the Llobregat as a hard working river, producing much with little, stuck in the minds of the Catalans. 蠻懷念的地方，幾年前做《伸縮耳》時也來過附近，那天好像走了快40公里。這次騎著車，看到一些在曬太陽的牛。一路上蠻舒服的，但有時會看到路面上有些疑似路殺留下的痕跡。 This is quite a nostalgic place. A few years ago, I came near here whenworking on Extendable Ears. That day, I walked almost 40 kilometers. This time, I rode a scooter and saw some cows basking in the sun. The journey was quite pleasant, but sometimes I noticed traces on the road that seemed to be the result of roadkill.

臺灣《看路》田調是秘密進行，夾雜在工作間。雖不像在法國溼地騎單車愜意，但也算是調劑。今天趁日落前到這觀察，後來變很濕冷，幾乎凍僵了。勉強找到超商買微波飯糰，差點沒法順利用手拿飯糰給嘴吃。 The field research for Watch Out Taiwan was done secretly, squeezed between work trips. Although it wasn’t as relaxing as wetland cycling in France, it was a refreshment. Today, I observed this area before sunset, but it got cold and rainy—I was nearly frozen. Upon reaching a convenience store, I bought a microwaved rice ball—almost couldn’t lift it to my mouth.

夏天短暫回臺，沒和人說。在這做《看路》可能和法國差很多。清潔隊會不會清走珠寶？大家會不會超會尋寶，太快找完？颱風會不會把寶吹走？ I returned to Taiwan briefly in summer without telling anyone. Would making Watch Out be very different here? Would cleaners quickly remove the jewelleries? Would people find everything instantly? Would typhoons wash the treasures away?

中午在路上發現一隻乾掉的黃鼠狼，讓我想起在法國路邊發現的乾狐狸，毛髮都很耀眼，也都看得到銳利的牙齒。 At noon, I found a dried-up weasel. It reminded me of the dried foxes I came across on French roadsides. Their fur was strikingly vibrant, and I could see their sharp teeth.

傍晚看到四、五隻黑色的豬在田邊準備過馬路，還好路上的車都會禮讓豬。以前沒來過這個市鎮，這是三月回荷蘭前最後一次田調行程。 In the evening, I saw four or five black pigs by the fields, ready to cross the road. Thankfully, all the cars on the road yielded to them. I had never been to this town before, and this was my last field research trip before returning to the Netherlands in March.

因為《看路》，我終於有機會來這走走。騎了很多路。有的橋很長，風也好大；低估了天氣。傍晚後回程時好冷，快失溫了，幸好有便利超商可讓我躲一下。後來總算驚險騎回市區；這次發現很冷時喝甜的熱飲沒用，吃熱飯糰比較有效。 Because of Watch Out, I finally had the chance to explore here. I rode a lot, crossing some long bridges where the wind was fierce. I underestimated the weather. On the way back after sunset, it got so cold I almost suffered from hypothermia. Thankfully, I found a convenience store to take shelter in. Eventually, I struggled back to the city. I realized that when it’s freezing, sweet hot drinks aren’t as helpful—eating a warm rice ball works much better.
